UCAC offers comprehensive track and field training with NCCP certified coaches. View the events below and meet the coaches.

Sprints & Hurdles

60m to 400m, 60mH to 400mH, 4x100m, 4x200m and 4x400m.

Coaches

Dale Schoenthaler, Ricardo Greenidge

Outline

The Sprints and Hurdles coaches Dale (Sprints & Hurdles) and Ricardo (Sprints only) work with athletes to set goals, improve their technique, conditioning and develop their mental preparedness for competitions.

A weight training program is offer two to three times per week at the Foothills Weight Training Facility.

The Sprints & Hurdles groups train at the University of Calgary Olympic Oval during Indoor, November – April, and at Foothills Athletics Park during Outdoor, April – August.

Middle & Long Distance / Cross Country / Road

600m, 800m, 1200m, 1500m, 3000m, 5000m, 10,000m. Steeplechase, Cross-country, Road races; 5km to the Marathon.

Coaches

Doug Lamont, Steve Adams

Outline

The Distance coaches, Doug and Steve, create training program to build not only running endurance, but they also work on developing speed endurance necessary to the shorter races.

A weight training program is offer two to three times per week at the Foothills Weight Training Facility.

The Distance groups train at the University of Calgary Olympic Oval during Indoor, November – April, and at Foothills Athletics Park during Outdoor, April – August. Cross-Country training is held at Confederation Park, late summer through Fall.

Jumps

Long Jump, Triple Jump, High Jump, Pole Vault

Coaches

Taran Schubert, James Holder, Jane Cox

Outline

The Jumps Group coaches, Taran, James, and Jane ensure a solid conditioning training combined with technical training to develop the necessary skills of the jumper; power, speed, technical ability.

A weight training program is offer two to three times per week at the Foothills Weight Training Facility.

The Jumps Group train at the University of Calgary Olympic Oval and Jack Simpson Track during Indoor, November – April, and at Foothills Athletics Park during Outdoor, April – August.

Throws

Shot Put (SP), Discus (DT), Javelin (JT), Hammer (HT), Weight Throw (WT)

Kristian Watson

Outline

The Throw Group coach, Kristian, also coaches the University of Calgary Dino Throwers, integrating many practices with the varsity program, allowing novice athletes the opportunity to train alongside high performance athletes. His holistic approach to throwing far is rooted in keeping aware of the latest developments in technique, conditioning and lifestyle from around the world. While at the same time taking into account the individual athletes physical and emotional reactions to prescribed training and constantly adjusting programs to suit needs of the individual athlete.

A weight training program is offer two to three times per week at the Foothills Weight Training Facility.

The Throw Group train for SP and WT at the University of Calgary Olympic Jack Simpson Track during Indoor, November – April, at Foothills Athletics Park (SP, DT) and Glenmore Athletics Park (HT) during Outdoor, April – August.

Combined Events

Decathlon, Heptathlon, Pentathlon

Coaches

Les Gramantik, James Holder, Duncan Margach

Outline

The Combined Events require a multitude of physical and technical skill sets. The coaches, Les, James and Duncan, train the athletes balancing their training components to best enable them to develop across a broad physical and mental spectrum; managing the physiological, psychological, technical, and tactical requirements required.

A weight training program is offer two to three times per week at the Foothills Weight Training Facility.

The Combined Events Group train at the University of Calgary Olympic Oval and Jack Simpson Track during Indoor, November – April, and at Foothills Athletics Park during Outdoor, April – August.
